Caen, the capital of Lower-Nomandy ("Basse Normandie") is a city steeped in history, having been the seat of power of the Dukes of Normandy, most notably during the reign of William the Conqueror in the 11th century and the centre of the struggle for the liberation of France during the battle of Normandy in 1944.

Despite the latter, many sites of historical interest remain, including William’s castle fort in the centre of Caen (photo at the bottom of the home page), and the “Abbaye aux Hommes” (FB22 web page banner ) and the “Abbaye aux Dames”.   Caen also hosts the “Memorial” Peace Museum and is close to many well-known attractions, such as Bayeux and its Tapestry (top left), the Normandy Landing Beaches, Honfleur (top middle) and Mont Saint Michel (bottom left), to name just a few.
